Today is Veterans Day, and the Vineyard will join the rest of the country in solemn celebration of the national holiday honoring those who have served.

By long tradition, flags went up along the Avenue of Flags in Oak Grove Cemetery early this morning. Flags come down at 3 p.m.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9261 will host the annual Veterans Day Parade in Oak Bluffs. The parade steps off at 10:45 a.m. from in front of Nancy’s Restaurant and proceeds to the monument at Ocean Park for a brief ceremony. The parade will then return to Nancy’s and disband.

Veterans ride Steamship Authority ferries for free all day.

Schools, post offices and government buildings are closed.

The Vineyard Gazette office is open Friday. Due to the national holiday, subscribers to the Gazette who usually get their newspaper by mail will see a delay in delivery. Subscribers are welcome to drop by the Edgartown office to pick up a copy of the newspaper, or find it on Island newsstands.
