A GoFundMe fundraiser created in the wake of Islander and Maine Maritime Academy student Riley Ignacio-Cameron’s death has raised more than $57,000 since it began last week. The page has served as both a site for fundraising and condolences for the community.
Mr. Ignacio-Cameron died on Dec. 10 in a car crash that claimed the lives of four passengers in total and injured three others, all students at Maine Maritime Academy.
A funeral for Mr. Ignacio-Cameron was held in Aquinnah on Dec. 18.
The GoFundMe campaign was started by Wenonah Madison.
“We are heartbroken by the sudden loss of Riley, who passed away in a car accident last Saturday, December 10,” Ms. Madison wrote on the page. “This tragedy was a tremendous loss for so many, including the family and friends of Riley, the families and friends of the other passengers, the MMA community and our island community.”
Contributions are still being accepted at the GoFundMe site and will go to funeral expenses and financial support for the Ignacio-Cameron family.
