State Rep. Dylan Fernandes has secured $1,165,000 for the Cape and Islands in the fiscal year 2024 Massachusetts House of Representatives budget to expand social services, support local nonprofits and businesses, and enact environmental protections.
A total of $75,000 has been secured to enhance services by expanding transportation services for seniors in order to access basic needs and care, and expand available health care and human services for Island residents.
Funding for environmental protection actions totaling $150,000 will be used towards shellfish propagation on the Cape and Islands, and to monitor water quality in the Vineyard Sound and Buzzards Bay.
Representative Fernandes also negotiated an additional $125,000 in funding for local organizations, including $50,000 for MVY Radio to buy new audio, video and multi-media equipment.
The legislation will now move to the Senate for approval. The final version will then be sent to the governor for her signature.
