The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection gave special commendations to two public Island water systems this week for their exemplary service.

In honor of National Drinking Water Week, the state agency awarded the Martha’s Vineyard Airport an honorable mention in the non-transient and non-community systems category. The Edgartown water district receieved the same award in the category of medium and large community systems.

“We are proud to partner with and honor this year’s award recipients in recognition of their round-the-clock efforts to operate superior water systems,” wrote MassDEP commissioner Bonnie Heiple. Fifty-nine other systems also received awards on the basis of conservation, compliance with regulations and water quality.
