The Flying Horses, our National Landmarks carousel, came to us from Coney Island in 1884. This attracts more than 300,000 every season to try to catch the rings. The recently-restored horses and their platform will be celebrated this Saturday, May 27 with free rides from 10 to 11 a.m. and free popcorn all day long.

Vineyard Gardens is also open for the season. Seven days a week you can get perennials, annuals, shrubs, trees and veggies. It is a beautiful place to explore.

The Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club holds its annual plant sale at The Old Mill in West Tisbury this Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m until 2 p.m. They have many choices.

May would not be May without the start-up of Grace Church’s seasonal lobster rolls. Order on their website or app or call in to 508-693-0332.

Another seasonal tradition. On May 13, the first pitch at Fenway was thrown by our Emma Lovewell. Emma’s new book has come out. We shall be hearing a lot more about this dynamic young woman.

Speaking of authors, Tom Dresser has written about our Island in the 1920s. Tom will be out and about at many libraries, bookstores, senior centers...wherever this prolific writer can get his story out.

So many of our young folks are graduating, winning awards and actively participating in sports. Tony and Taylor Breth’s daughter Charlee helped her Nationals team win last week. Charlee was given the game’s winning ball after her fantastic hit. Way to go, Charlee!

Angela Piper Murphy attended the graduation of her son Hollis Kelly from St. Michael’s College in Vermont. Hollis was back at work at Farm Neck two days after graduation! Congratulations!

Get well wishes to my good friend Doug Grant in New York City.

The birthday bandwagon pulled along Jude Byrd on May 16. Jude turned eight. James Cleary celebrated on May 20. Janice Donaroma observed May 21. May 23 honored Judy Crawford and James Gardella. And on May 24 Bob Dylan took the cake. Many happy returns.
