We are off to a good start. Great weather, no boat problems, Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish playing all over in Boston, the Cape and on Martha’s Vineyard. The Flying Horses, Coop de Ville and Gio’s are open. My dear friend, artist Colin Ruel, opened his art studio in Chilmark for the season last weekend.

Artist Kathy Poehler has many of her glorious mermaid seaweed artworks at the Old Sculpin in Edgartown and at Featherstone in Oak Bluffs for your enjoyment. I hear Kathy also segued into some sea glass art. No doubt she has done this before. Everything was hung everywhere just in time for the arrival of Dean Poehler — her husband Eric’s brother — and his family to travel from New Hamshire to the Island. What a great family.

I was sorry to miss the annual Evening of the Arts at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School last weekend. I usually attend faithfully. Many of our creative high school students also have their work on display at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center in the Art of Conservation exhibit presented by Vineyard Conservation Society.

Pia Centenari-Leonard has her stained glass art on display at the Galaxy Gallery in Oak Bluffs.

Town Picnic was held on a grand, sunny day that had good temperatures. Same time, next year.

The Hopkins family is thrilled that daughter-granddaughter Danielle Hopkins has been chosen as a Marshall-Motley Scholar. Danielle will receive a full scholarship to Yale Law School. This scholarship is presented to young law students who are interested in becoming civil rights lawyers in the South. Danielle credits the late Dan Sharkovitz, who taught her English class at the regional high school, with mentoring her.

The Feast is back at the Portuguese American Club in Oak Bluffs this year. Be there July 15 and 16 for Portuguese food, music, dancing and our neighbors.

My youngest grandson, 16-year-old Dominic Leigh Clark, was thrilled to escort his 15-year-old girlfriend, Andrea, to her quinceañera last weekend. Andrea had a gorgeous dress. Her male attendants wore black tuxedos, pink vests and pink bow ties. The food, music and dancing were endless. Fun times in Rockford, Ill.

Be still my heart! The great Jorma Kaukonen will perform a concert on June 10 at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown. He’ll also be at The Loft on June 16. See you there.

Kayla Darcy’s Mom, the irrepressible Joan Carol Kistner, died last week in upstate New York. Her biography is so impressive. Our condolences.

Of course the other great woman to pass last week was Tina Turner. What a force!

Get well wishes to my sister in law, Nancy Gardella.

The birthday bandwagon pulled along Chris Osborn and his son Benjamin last week. Photographer extraordinaire Gino Mazzaferro celebrated on May 28. May 29 was claimed by Alan Brigish, Fanny Staunton Ogilvie and Gustavo Silva. And on May 30 Jason Canha and Sam Feldman took the cake. Many happy returns.
