For the adventurous and hardy, the annual Cross-Island Hike takes place Saturday, June 3. Each year the route changes but many of the faces remain the same as stalwarts visit with the Island by foot.

The event began in 1993, with the land bank proposing the day-long hike as a local way to observe National Trails Day. The hike is long, but usually less than 20 miles, and walkers can drop in and drop out at any point.

Each year’s hike begins where the previous year’s hike ended so for those with agile memories it will be like one continuous walk about the Island. This year’s hike begins at 8:15 a.m. at Long Point Beach.
