Well, I put the snow shovel away and the temperature plummeted. I don’t know if I should say I am sorry or just take it as the New England weather again. We do need the rain so I will take that and hope that the ground gets saturated.

Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Deion Estrella, who celebrated on June 3, Lowen Shaw on June 4, Luiza DeOliveira on June 7, Allie Branca, James Gould-Lamont, Dejaun Boshart on June 8 and to Sophia Boshart and Hannah McCarthy who celebrate their day on June 9.

Happy anniversary wishes to Bob and Gail Avakian who just celebrated 50 years of marriage. Bob and Gail were married on June 9, 1973 in Pawtucket, R.I. Their sons and daughters in law — Derek and Brooke, and Alex and Emily — hosted a party to celebrate the occasion at the Dr. Daniel Fisher House with many friends attending. Congratulations to you both and here is to many more years together.

Congratulations to Haley Krauss and Charles Duquette, who were united in marriage on June 3. Their wedding was held at the Winnetu Oceanside Resort in Katama. It was a windy and chilly day but that did not affect the celebration with so many family members and friends in attendance. Haley is the daughter of Richard and Cindy Krauss of Edgartown and Charlie is the son of Charles and Edna Duquette of Norton. Both Haley and Charlie serve the Island as paramedics. I wish them many happy years ahead.

Signs of summer: many stores open in town, parking is harder, you have to time your trip to the Stop & Shop, your summer friends are arriving, college students are arriving, the Vineyard Sound has posted their summer schedule, the bi-plane is buzzing around, the osprey are hovering over, the rhododendrons are in full bloom, the serpent is in the pond, and the water is turning that pretty blue. So, yes, it is a great time of year.

The League of Women Voters of Martha’s Vineyard recycles used inkjet cartridges. It keeps them out of the landfills and postpones decomposition, which can take more than 1,000 years. There are drop boxes at the town halls in Chilmark and Aquinnah, the YMCA, and the libraries in West Tisbury, Tisbury, Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
