As a daughter of a World War II veteran, I shall never forget what D-Day, celebrated on June 6, meant to this country and the world. Take a moment.
Congratulations to all our kids who made it through the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School, Falmouth Academy and off-Island high schools, and our elementary students who are moving on. Our community is so proud of you all. Have a great summer, stay safe and don’t forget your reading lists.
Anne D. Grandin has brought her latest paintings to the Louisa Gould Gallery. Great time to go see them.
Max Decker has brought some of his latest paintings to the Field Gallery in West Tisbury. I am so amazed at the work my former students can do.
Continuing with the arts that are such a part of our community, my friend John Crelan is hosting his annual Bloomsday performance. Bloomsday is June 16 but our show will be at 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 17 in the Katharine Cornell Theatre upstairs above town hall. Admission is $25 cash or check at the door or tickets can be bought ahead of time at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore.
This celebration of the works of James Joyce includes performances from Phil Dietrich, Molly Conole, Gerry Yukevich, Kevin Ryan, Alexandros Y. Chiara, Pam Schnattely, Jan Chickering and others. Dancing and music. Take a stroll though Dubliners, witness the work in Ulysses. There is an elevator if you need to get to the second floor. I’ll see you there.
My big event this Sunday, June 11, will be to get to the Edgartown Bookstore between 2 and 4 p.m. to see my dear friend, author Holly Nadler, and have her autograph her book The Hobo Diaries for me. Holly might even bring her new doggo, Lucia, who is extremely intelligent and well-trained. I have not met Lucia yet and I have not seen Holly for four years. I can’t wait.
One of my favorite Island Marines wants you to know that the MV Sharks game at our high school on Sunday, July 2 will include a celebration for all our veterans. The weather should be fine, I hope we are done with our fake spring by then.
The birthday bandwagon pulled along Doreen Kinsman on May 28. Olivia Gomez-Blanco celebrated on May 29. Robin Whitley O’Donnell had a party on June 6. And on June 8, Wendy Fitting, Miles Gross and David Alan Friedman take the cake. Many happy returns.
