“I’m blessed to have her here...still telling me what to do,” is how Sharon Bialy wrapped up a quick email to me about the visit her 94-year old mom made to Sharon’s Chowder Kettle Lane home. This is Ann’s second trip to Menemsha in the past three years and, let me tell you, she’s thrilled to be here. The journey, which takes about 12 hours from door to door, is like a version of that movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles, but throw in a boat for good measure.

After a catnap to snooze away the travel fatigue, Ann took her green thumb right into Sharon’s garden, where she helped work a little magic. She also has an appreciation for Beetlebung Farm so a visit to them, along with a stroll through Menemsha Fish Market to pay a visit to Stanley and Lanette, were a couple of Chilmark highlights.

Ann’s granddaughter and Sharon’s daughter, Michelle Berlinger, is also in town visiting for the week. In an effort have a little one on one time with her grandmother, Michelle volunteered to make the trip back to California with her. It sounds as though the three generation mini-reunion is memory-making.

Sisters Sarah Shanok Kitchens and Tova Shanok have been in town for a spell with their kiddos Hazel and Gabe. Sarah and Hazel traveled from New York and Tova and Gabe came from their home in Germany. The little ones pal around beautifully together while taking beach walks, having coffee — well, their moms do — on Squid Row, indulging in ice cream and just playing in the back yard of their Middle Road family home. What a pleasure it is to watch the next generation grow up enjoying the simple things in life.

One of Tabor House Road’s resident artists, Jennifer Burkin, has decided to take her passion for creativity to another level. She is offering art classes for kids ages 5-12, in your home. Jennifer, a professional artist and certified elementary teacher, is skilled in painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, crafts and more. She is looking for budding artists to teach her skills to this summer. If you’re interested in getting the whole scoop on Art to Go, give her a shout at 617-750-1224 or email jenburkin@hotmail.com.

If you are looking for something fun and totally geared towards little kids, the Chilmark Children’s Fair — a long-standing, multi-decade tradition — takes place this Saturday, June 17. Stop by the church grounds on Menemsha Crossroad between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. to enjoy fun activities including arts and crafts projects, face painting, food, bouncy house, games and pony rides.

Among others, you might just have the chance to say hello and chat with friends and coordinators Emily Broderick, Janet Weidner, Julie Flanders, Pam Goff, Kathie Carroll, Kim Manter and more. Frosting your own cupcake with a cheerfully-painted face is always the best way to spend a Saturday morning.

Many of you may have heard sirens and seen the ambulance rolling on South Road early last week. The call was for a priority one — an acutely life-threatening illness or injury. A young man named Jared’s life hung in the balance.

I don’t know Jared personally but he was visiting friends, including West Tisbury’s Walter Greene, from his home in Costa Rica. Jared fell from a roof and sustained multiple injuries including fracturing two vertebrae in his neck. A GoFundMe medical-related fundraiser has been set up in his name. You can find it by searching Jared’s Recovery & Care on gofundme.com. A big thank you is extended to all responding officers, EMTs, paramedics, MedFlight and more.

Although months and months of planning took place in near-secrecy and the ceremony took place with just a handful of close family, the official word is out. Bill Fielder and Olivia Higham tied the knot overlooking Dogfish Bar this past Saturday, June 10 just after the sprinkling clouds passed and skies brightened, as if to wash the slate clean and make way for a wonderful new beginning as a married couple. Congratulations. I look forward to whooping it up with you soon.
