Phyllis Vecchia and her creative drama class recently ended another year of instruction, teaching women in history to the Tisbury School sixth and eighth grade students, and the second and third grade students at the Chilmark School.

At the Tisbury School, the eighth grade students studied social activist and suffragist Ida B. Wells-Barnett, and climate activist Greta Thunberg.

The sixth grade class learned about Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Katherine Johnson, a mathematician featured in the film Hidden Figures, and human rights activist and former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

The Chilmark School second and third grade students enjoyed acting out the life of Mary Chipman Lawrence, a whaling wife from Falmouth.

The program is paid for by the town of Tisbury, the PTO of the Chilmark School and private funders and donors.
