What a passel of beautiful but very warm days we are having! The one thing to watch out for is a possible gale on Thursday at 11 a.m. through Friday at 12 a.m.

I want to grow up to be a meteorologist. You can always be wrong and still keep your job.

It was a week of great island people receiving awards. Wiet Bacheller received the Art Buchwald Award for outstanding community service as an educator and for all she has done for the community. It was presented to her at our annual Possible Dreams Auction for our Martha’s Vineyard Community Services. The Martha’s Vineyard Museum honored community members with the MV Medal at its annual meeting. Those honored were Lisa Belcastro, Craig Dripps and Richard Lewis Taylor. These three were cited for preserving the history, art and culture of the Island.

The Women’s Club of Martha’s Vineyard presented its 125th prayer sampler to Virginia Stone. She won that at the group’s annual birthday party.

Stephen Hart’s fundraising concert for his niece Sofia, which took place at the Old Whaling Church last Friday night, was a great success. Sofia needs a heart transplant. You may still donate.

The Possible Dreams annual auction for Martha’s Vineyard Community Services was a great success last Sunday on a very hot night. Seth Meyers was the host. The incomparable Sherry Truhlar was the auctioneer. I can never forget my friend Dr. Milton Mazer, who founded this organization. I was at New York University with his fabulous daughter, Ruth Tessa Mazer.

Artist and photographer Louisa Gould is having a cocktail party opening reception on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. at her gallery on Main street in Vineyard Haven. This is for a solo show by a wonderful artist, Sean Roach. I’ll see you there.

Where you will not see me this weekend is at the book sales at either the Oak Bluffs or West Tisbury libraries. I am already drooling over them but my housemate has forbidden me to attend. He tells me I cannot fit a bobby pin in this house, let alone another book. I have been to both of these sales in the past and can testify they are of high quality.

In continued summer traffic problems a small plane with only the pilot made an emergency landing in the Manuel Correllus State Forest on Sunday. Thankfully, he was uninjured.

Our condolences to the family and friends of Tafari Campbell, who died in an accident at the Edgartown Great Pond last weekend. The Obama family is very saddened. They wrote a lovely tribute to Tafari, who was their friend and chef.

Kathy Laskowski is getting her sea legs back after knee replacement at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital last week. She is back on the Island. She will be swimming with her Polar Bear Club soon. Get well wishes to her.

The birthday bandwagon pulled along Tim and Beckett Wilson on July 20. That was the same date my friend Marcia Carino’s beautiful Francisca Rose celebrated. My sister Patriot fan Rachel Mims also partied on July 20. Brazil’s loss to our shores, the lovely Gisele Nascimento, claims August 1.

I share my day, August 3, with some very famous people: Tom Colligan, Tom Brady and — alas! — the incomparable Tony Bennett. On August 4, Elaine Klein and Barack Obama take the cake. Many happy returns.— Nancy Gardella
