The first Chappy Community Center potluck of the off-season will be on Wednesday, Sept. 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. Bring a dish to serve eight. Future potlucks will be scheduled for the third Wednesday of each month. If you would like to be the host for one of the upcoming dinners, talk to Tina. Activities continue at the center into the fall. See the CCC website to keep up to date.

All are welcome to the AA Big Book study at 5:30 p.m. on Thursdays at the community center. Call or text 508-274-1062 for questions or a ride from the ferry point.

Save your icky stuff for the next household hazardous waste collection on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 9 a.m. to noon at the transfer station across from the airport. See the Martha’s Vineyard Refuse District website for complete information. Products containing mercury, such as watch and hearing aid batteries, thermometers, barometers, fluorescent and neon bulbs, are accepted free of charge daily at the transfer station.

Tropical storm Lee will have an impact on the island by the end of next week. Whether it will be a lot of trouble or just a welcome rain event remains to be seen as its track develops. All of the elements are present for a whopper of a storm.

I’ll be sounding like a skipping record every week now until the Derby ends with a reminder that between Oct. 15 and Thanksgiving, only one Chappy ferry will be in service. The shorter of the two ferry boats will be handling all of the traffic alone.

You have plenty of time to get your rusted-in trailer hitch loose. By removing it, you make more room on the ferry and make it a whole lot more likely that your friends and neighbors will get on behind you instead of having to wait another trip. You may be getting on the ferry one trip sooner because someone ahead of you removed their hitch.
