Saturday's Full Moon will create spooky light that sets the tone for Halloween festivities in the days that follow, culminating with All Hallow’s Eve on Tuesday, Oct. 31.
From 12 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Halloween in Oak Bluffs features all-ages fun with a costume contest, trick or treating at Circuit avenue businesses, free films at the Strand and pumpkins decorated by students from the Oak Bluffs School. It culminates with the BestFest Parade starting on Ocean avenue at 7 p.m.; bring musicmakers, wear a costume and celebrate while walking the parade route.
On Sunday, the costumed fun switches to Edgartown when Happy Haunting brings little ghosts and goblins to Main street for trick or treating from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Vineyard Haven gets its turn on Tuesday with trick or treating and a Main street parade beginning at 3:45 p.m.
Also in Vineyard Haven on Tuesday, Halloween on the Hill takes place at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse and the Vineyard Haven Library open their doors for trick or treating from 5 to 8 p.m. Travel up State Road to MV Screenprinting where its annual Haunted House offers chills and thrills from 4 to 10 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday.
For the main event, Halloween night trick or treating, road closures will help keep costumed kids safe. In Vineyard Haven, to prepare for the throngs headed to William street, road closures begin at 5 p.m. on Spring street from Look street to Main street; Franklin street from Clough Lane to Spring street; Center street from Franklin to Main; and Church street from Franklin to Main.
Oak Bluffs will close Vineyard avenue from its intersection with Dukes County avenue to Pacific avenue from 5 to 8 p.m.
Up-Island, the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury welcomes everyone on Halloween night from 6 to 8 p.m. for hay rides, games and treats. In Chilmark, the firemen’s association invites children to the fire station from 5 to 5:45 p.m.
For adults, Habitat for Humanity’s annual fundraising dance party at the Portuguese American Club on Saturday night features a costume contest from 7 to 10 p.m. Also on Saturday, artist Taylor Stone welcomes gallerygoers to an opening reception for her exhibit There’s Nothing But Witches and Wizards Out There from 4 to 8 p.m. at The Workshop Gallery in Vineyard Haven.
And on Halloween night, The Port Hunter in Edgartown closes out its season with a party featuring the Dock Dance Band, starting at 10 p.m.
