Islanders old and young are invited to Healthy Aging MV’s Community Mobilization Summit on Aging event this week.
Taking place in four sessions from noon to 6:30 at the West Tisbury Grange Hall on Tuesday, Nov. 14, the summit will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Healthy Aging MV (HAMV), looking at the present and future of older adults and their role on the Vineyard.
Panel discussions, demographic analysis and a celebratory cake are all on the agenda.
“What we’re attempting to do is to really raise awareness of the challenges in aging in place on the Island, as well as all of the contributions that our older adults contribute,” said Cindy Trish, executive director of HAMV.
“We felt like it was time to bring people together to talk about what’s the state of the state right now, what we see happening over the next 10 years and how we can lean in, as a community, to address the challenges,” she said.
With one third of Islanders now over the age of 60, a number expect to grow in coming years, now is a critical time to start having these discussions, Ms. Trish said. “We want people to leave kind of educated, energized and willing to move forward.”
The day will begin with a presentation by Nancy Aronie, founder of the Chilmark Writer’s Workshop, on memoir writing for older adults.
Lunch will be supplied by The Food Truck.
At 2 p.m., a panel entitled 6 Key Priorities For An Age-Friendly Island will commence, with participation from Ms. Trish, Martha’s Vineyard Hospital president Denise Schepici and Edgartown Council on Aging administrator Lyndsay Famariss.
After a break, Ms. Trish and Martha’s Vineyard Commission executive director Adam Turner will discuss potential aging trends on the Vineyard for the next 10 years, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
The day concludes with a talk on the local impact of state aging policies from Massachusetts AARP director Michael E. Festa, starting at 4:45.
“We want folks to be able to volunteer and share experience, expertise, energy with Island organizations,” Ms. Trish said. “To optimize the contribution we can make on a day-to-day basis to the Island.”
