The Felix Neck fall festival on Friday and the Oak Bluffs tree lighting on Saturday anchor the Thanksgiving holiday weekend happenings.

This year’s fall festival takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. Titled Scat Happens, one of the main activities involves exploring the secret signs of nature. There is also a guided bird walk, a bird call competition, hay rides and squash bowling, of course. There is no admission fee this year.

The Vineyard Artisans weekend festival takes place at the Agricultural Hall on Friday and Saturday.

On Saturday morning, hit the ground running with the 5K for KJ through the Manuel Corellus State Forest. The annual race was established in honor of a former cross country runner who lost his life in an automobile accident. Proceeds go to the Kevin Johnson Cross Country Scholarship Fund.

Light Up Oak Bluffs is a day-long affair of shopping and holiday fun on Saturday, culminating with the lighting of the tree in Healey Square at 6:30 p.m., complete with Santa arriving by fire truck.

In Chilmark on Saturday, the first Chilmark Potluck Jam of the season embraces musicians one and all to the Chilmark Community Center stage, beginning at 6 p.m. Bring a dish to share, but no alcohol this year.

And at the Film Center in Vineyard Haven on Saturday the laughs begin at 7:30 p.m. for the Thanksgiving Recovery Comedy Show. The show is hosted by Gary Marino and stars Chris Zito, with special guest, the Island’s own Marty Nadler.

This is just a sampling of the holiday events; check calendar.vineyardgazette.com for a full schedule of goings on about the Island.
