The race for the tribal council at-large seat for the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) will go to a run-off this weekend after November’s election resulted in a tie.

Elections took place earlier this fall on Nov. 19. The positions of vice chair, treasurer and tribal council at-large had been open, with incumbent Clarence ‘Al’ Clarke winning vice chair, William Durwood Vanderhoop winning treasurer, and the at-large position resulting in a tie between Steven Craddock and Kayla Darcy. After a recount on Dec. 3 confirmed the tie, the tribe scheduled a runoff election for this Sunday, Dec. 17, tribal chief Ryan Malonson confirmed in an email.

This year marked the first time the tribe has held elections by in-person and mail-in voting.

Run-off results will be posted to the tribal member portal on Jan. 4.
