On Tuesday morning the breach at Wasque was flowing freely. I looked at it right at the time of high water for Wasque Point. It was two hours before high tide in Edgartown, but the water was flowing out. Go figure.
The aerial photos that folks are sending around show that the breach is very shallow at low tide. The channel is so narrow that someone who doesn’t mind wet feet could probably take a flying leap across it.
My non-doctorate opinion of the future of the breach is that it won’t close up right now, though shallow it may be. The southeast storm of a couple of weeks ago that washed the end of the advancing barrier beach into the well-established channel definitely interrupted the usual natural process that Katama Bay breaches seem to follow. I believe that the east end of Norton Point will have to reestablish itself above sea level and continue to migrate to Muskeget Channel where the north-south current will smear the end of the breach channel closed.
But what the heck do I know about breaches? It’s still anybody’s guess.
