As the New Year gets underway, perhaps a good place to set the pace is at an exhibit of leaf art by Emily Davis. The artwork is at the West Tisbury library throughout the month of January. Ms. Davis has been working with plants for years and the exhibit showcases the fruits of her labors and passion.
After spending time among the leaves, become a bread baker under the tutelage of the Vineyard Baker, aka Teri Culletto, who is offering bi-weekly Saturday morning bread baking lessons. On Jan. 6 the star of the show is English muffins. The classes take place at the Farm Institute and run from 10 a.m. to noon. Sign up at lbrown@thetrustees.org.
Or start the morning on Saturday at 9 a.m. with an exploration of the Brickyard in Chilmark on a guided nature hike with The Trustees. Email questions to cdrogin@thetrustees.org.
Also on Saturday, give your pets the mani-pedi they deserve at a nail clinic hosted by the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard. Expert Ellen Blodgett will be at the shelter from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., ready to trim the nails of dogs, cats, bunnies and guinea pigs. The cost is $20, with proceeds going to help the shelter; walk-ins only.
Or head further up-Island for the annual Music and Light service at the Chilmark Community Church from 5 to 7 p.m. Island musicians performing include Adele Dreyer, Missis Biskis, Sean McMahon, Molly Conole and Mark Lovewell, the Loon Lane Players, and more.
Music, nature, baking and pets — perfect ways to begin the new year in style.
