No breach!

For the past week, photos and opinions have been bandied about regarding the possibility of a new Norton Point breach. With that impending Tuesday 50-mile per hour northeaster headed our way, the barrier beach was deemed ripe for a breaching.

During the Tuesday afternoon high tide, flooding of Dock street was expected. My forecaster predicted that the tide would run one to two-feet above normal. All we got was about eight inches at the base of the ferry ramp on the Edgartown side. That made me suspect that there had indeed been a new opening that was allowing the storm-driven tidal surge to leak out of the south end of Katama Bay.

On Wednesday morning a couple of hours before low tide, I motorboated down to investigate. The whole length of Norton Point was snow covered and generally pretty high. No problem seeing the very-small area that had washed over after the snow stopped falling. That must have been during the overnight high tide.

So, no new breach with this last storm but I would still say that the beach is ripe for a new opening.

The next Chappy Community Center potluck supper is on Wednesday, Feb. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. If you haven’t been to a potluck this winter or if you haven’t been to one ever, you should go. I promise you will have a good time. Bring a dish of something that you would like to eat big enough to serve eight people.

There’s intentionally no organization of who brings what. The goal is not a balanced meal but rather a reason to get together. It makes for some interesting meals. Once, years ago, everyone brought a desert! We were all pretty hyper by the end of the evening. Clean up went real quick.
