It seems like a common writing prompt for this time of year is the simple yet complex subject of spring. I recall writing about the season back in elementary school. Each student’s essay touched on different topics having to do with the season: flowers, bunnies, sunshine, baseball. It is all a matter of perspective and there certainly is no wrong answer.

Spring seems to be a favorite season for many. It always is associated with new beginnings, hopes, opportunities and, of course, more sunshine. On the more technical side, the axis of the Earth increases its tilt to the sun offering increased daylight and warmth. I guess it all goes hand-in-hand along with fresh air, vitamin D and more motivation to just get out and enjoy.

The spring weather has encouraged folks to get outdoors for beach walks, yard tidying, trout fishing and a nice game of catch. Little lambs have been born, daffodils and crocuses are beginning to bloom. Ospreys are returning to their nests to hunt and start families. We left our leaf litter (#leavetheleaves) to protect what few plants I’ve managed to keep alive with my deadly thumbs, so I am hopeful the frailest of plants will burst through without trouble.

The hint of warmth in the air has brought Steve and Emily Broderick back from the Florida Keys. The sunshine was a daily dose of good medicine as were the visit from much of their clan, but grandsons Hunter, Duke and Zeke were a highlight.

Ed Sussman and Dana Nunes have also returned from their three-month getaway to their home away from home in New Zealand. According to Dana: “It’s been another wonderful three months of new and interesting people and beautiful places. We stopped in just about every cafe we came across, walked every beach and botanic garden, and left no dark chocolate Tim-Tam unmolested.”

Ed is back partaking in morning coffee at the Texaco and afternoon naps in his car near Crab Corner. Life is adventurous, but also offers moments of very predictable behavior.

Family and friends gathered on Oppenheimer Beach, Cruz Bay, Saint Thomas to celebrate the marriage of Sean Keen and Jordan Gonzalski. Sean Keen is the son of Lisa and the late Gerry of the boat Odontoblast. Among the family and friends in attendance were Sean’s sister Kelly, her husband Tyler Andresen and their three adorable kiddos Violet, Casey and Maya. Sarah Andresen also ventured down to partake in the festivities. Spider happily stayed home to hold down the fort walking their pups, having his daily lunch at the PlaneView and sneaking a Hershey’s with almonds at the Texaco. May joy and happiness continue for all.

Well wishes to Margaret Maida who is housebound for the time being with a broken foot. We all know those boot casts can be cumbersome, but from what I gather Margaret is doing her best to keep her spirits up and stay engaged. You know how to reach me, Margaret, should you need anything. Although I know your family is taking good care.

Ella Keene jetted home for a week-ish vacation from her freshman year at Cal Poly. I know her folks, Hillary and John, were thrilled to have her under their roof. While home, younger brother Lathrop had his first high school baseball game of the season. They won by beating Nantucket 9-0.

Don’t forget, Tuesday pizza nights at the Chilmark Church are back. Pizzas put forth on the table along with a mix of salads and cookies shared by the occasionally ambitious attendee. Most evenings Bananagrams are played for those who want to peel, dump and use their creative spelling skills. The light in the sky gives the kids an opportunity to kick a ball around or play a game of tag so if you’re thinking ahead put those feet in sneakers. Questions? Give Rev.
