Spring postseason action is underway for Vineyard high school student-athletes and the track and field team kicked things off with a strong showing at the Cape and Islands League championship last week in Barnstable.
Madison Mello and Camille Brand each brought home a first place finish — Mello with a 33’07 toss of the shot put and Brand with a 5’02 leap in the high jump.
Alexa Schroeder and Juliana Desouza each notched a third place finish as well —Schroeder in the 800 meter at 2:35.53 and Desouza in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 2:35.53.
Other notable results included Brand coming in fourth in the 400 meter at 1:04.31, Jahzarah McIntosh also with a fourth place finish in the long jump at 14’11.75, Arjuna Begle finishing fifth in the 1 mile at 6:04.89, Enzo Reis fifth in the 400 meter hurdles at 1:02.69, Kaniel Morgan fifth in discuss with a 113’03 toss, Xeandre Miller sixth in Javelin at 117’08 and Rodeo Purves-Langer sixth in the 800 meter with a time of 2:10.06.
Later last week, on Friday, Brand and Mello both finished in the top three of the respective events at the division five track and field championship at Bridgewater State University. Brand leaped 5’04 in the high jump for a tie of second place and Mello tossed the shot put 35’04 for a third place finish.
The sailing team also took part in postseason competition last week as they finished fourth in the Terk Regatta. They were the highest ranked squad from Massachusetts. Earlier, at the O’Day qualifier, Simon Hammarlund won the A-Division while his teammates also qualified for the New England Girls Fleet Racing Championship. The last time the Vineyarders had done so was in 2015. Coach Andrew Burr said their seventh place finish this year was outstanding. Locally, the team finished second in the Cape and Islands League with an overall record of 17-8 in the regular season.
The boys and girls tennis teams, and the boys and girls lacrosse teams have all qualified for the playoffs. The 23rd ranked girls tennis squad will start their run on the road Wednesday against Danvers. The fifth ranked boys who defeated every Cape and Islands League opponent twice on their way to a league title, will take on the winner of Lowell Catholic vs. Maimonides at home at a date and time yet to be determined.
Boys lacrosse begins their playoff run on Friday, May 31 with an away game against Burlington. The girls lacross playoff schedule has not been announced yet.
While the baseball team missed out on making the playoffs, they did finish their season on a strong note as they defeated Monomoy at home and Nantucket on the road last week. Against the Sharks the boys won 5-3 and they finished the season with a sweep of the Whalers with a 8-2 triumph.
The Vineyarders had multiple highlight worthy seasons from players such as Axel Abrams, who pitched the most innings for the team and finished with a 1.16 ERA. Eli Bryant led the team in strikeouts with 43 and batted .333 at the dish. Hunter Johnson led the team in hits with 16 while hitting .356 and playing solid defense at catcher. Lathrop Keene led the team in runs scored while hitting .333. Nate Story had the most stolen bases with 13 and hit .306. Charlie Porterfield also stole 8 bags and hit .312.
Coach Kyle Crossland said next year’s team has a very bright future.
Lastly, in other high school sports news, former coach and teacher Lisa Knight was honored by the MIAA with the Massachusetts Women in Athletics Distinguished Service Award. Ms. Knight coached field hockey, basketball and softball at the high school and was a leader in organizing Special Olympics on the Island.
The award recognizes Ms. Knight’s contributions and devotion throughout her career to the Island’s female student-athletes as part of Massachusetts’ Celebration of Girls and Women In Sports Day.
