The Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society’s 54th season commences on July 6, however this summer a familiar and beloved face will be missing from the crowd.
Co-founder and former artistic director of the society Delores Stevens died in March at the age of 94.
Kimberly Baumhofer, board president for chamber music society, said that everyone in the organization is feeling the tremendous loss of Ms. Stevens.
“Dee was a force of nature,” Ms. Baumhofer said. “She worked into her 90s... so you can just tell by the longevity of her experience with the organization that she was really central to keeping chamber music on Martha’s Vineyard.”
Ms. Stevens is remembered for being an excellent pianist and bringing musicians from all over the world to play for the Island community. She also started the Island’s after-school program which has brought music to the local schools for over 35 years and funded two scholarships.
Ms. Baumhofer said the society is honoring her legacy this summer by bringing distinguished pianists to the Island. They hope to have a concert dedicated to honoring her legacy next year.
The season begins on July 6 at 3 p.m. with a children’s concert at 3 p.m. in the Edgartown Public Library. Cellist Amit Peled who will read from his children’s book A Cello Named Pablo, while accompanied by pianist Martin Labazevich.
The two return to the library the following day to perform a community concert at 4 p.m. This will be both Mr. Peled and Mr. Labazevich’s first time playing on the Island.
The community concert will include Edward Greig’s Cello Sonata in A minor Op. 36, Fredrich Gulda’s Concerto for Cello Intermission, and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Sonata for Cello and Piano Op.19.
On July 28 the Verona Quartet performs at Old Whaling Church in Edgartown, and on August 4, Diana Cohen, Roman Rabinovich and Nelson Ricardo Yovera Perez play the Old Whaling Church.
