The nights ahead will be ideal for look for shooting stars and even the Milky Way. The moon will not interfere, as it reaches New Moon phase on Sunday. If the weather cooperates, these nights are ideal for stepping out with a beverage and sitting on a beach chair. Look up, you may see a shooting star flying overhead.
This is a busy time of year for shooting stars. We started this week with the Delta Aquarid Meteor Shower and then later in this month we've got the most popular Perseid Meteor Shower. This is a prime time to be outdoors looking up. You don't know what you'll see. You could see a straggler from the Delta Aquarids coming up from the southern sky or see a Perseid coming from the northeast.
Add to the show, the Milky Way is spreading its clouds from north to south. The Milky Way, our galaxy has billions of stars. They appear as a faint stationary cloud that doesn't move with the weather.
Stargazing Event Chilmark
The Chilmark Public Library is hosting a stargazing night in the backyard on Wednesday, August 7, from 9 to 10 p.m. If the weather is fair I will be giving a talk about the stars overhead, plenty of science and some old astronomy storytelling. The program is free and sponsored by the Friends of the Chilmark Library.
