Renowned reggae artist Richie Spice headlines this year’s Martha’s Vineyard Sound Festival which takes place behind the Island Cove Mini Golf course on August 25.

Local and regional acts round out the set-list, including Marzel & The Breakdowns, Dukes County Love Affair, The Perceptionists and more.

When curating the lineup each year, festival producer Phil daRosa said he looks to add new talent to the core sound.

“I keep it musically diverse,” he said. “It’s not just a reggae festival. It’s got a bunch of local flavors and DJs that have been coming back year after year. [The key] is trying to keep it diverse, but also bring something new to the table.”

The first edition of the festival took place in 2014. A decade later, local support and sponsors has become more essential than ever.

“It’s sort of a hard landscape now because artists are tending to charge more money and production costs are up,” he said. “It really does come down to local businesses coming out and supporting these types of things to make them happen.”

The growth of the logistical team behind the event has been an important factor to ensuring the festival runs smoothly.

“Gathering a reliable team of people that can get stuff done on their own, but also come together as a collective, and be productive and efficient [is important],” he said. “We’re still building on that, but we’ve come a long way from just a couple of us to a nice little group of people sort of taking care of business.”
