Even though the summer season is coming to a close, the Chappy Community Center has a busy week ahead hosting yoga, mahjong, pickle ball, kids story time, toddlers playtime and the final ice cream social. And mark your calendar for the first potluck of the off-season on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
Celebrations of the lives of recently passed Chappaquiddickers are coming up. Bill Brine, Sr. will be honored on Saturday, August 24 at 12:30 p.m. at the CCC. Transportation will be provided from Chappy Point. Sydney Morris will be celebrated in October, on a date to be determined, and Bart Heywood will be lifted up on June 22, 2025.
The U.S. Coast Guard will perform annual in-the-water inspections of the Chappy ferryboats on Tuesday, Sept. 10 starting at about 10 a.m. The inspections include overboard and fire drills. The process may take a couple of hours during which only one vessel will be in service. Please plan accordingly and expect a delay in getting your vehicle across.
The National Hurricane Center often will declare that no cyclone activity is expected in the next seven days. Don’t bet on it. The weather is pretty unpredictable these days. The storm cells that dropped inches of welcome rain on the Islands during the last week showed up with only a couple of hours of warning. It then lingered much longer than expected.
Hurricanes don’t always announce their presence out over the far Atlantic. Lately they have formed up over the Bahamas. Keep an eye out for them at the National Hurricane Center and Mike’s Weather Page online. It’s a good idea to fill up drinking water jugs now while there is plenty of time.
