Steve Lohman’s exhibit at Turpentine Gallery marks the artist’s 40th year of showing his work on the Island. The exhibit opens on Sept. 15 and runs through the end of the month. It showcases 10 large sculptures and a collection of smaller pieces. Mr. Lohman’s sculptures are all three-dimensional pieces of line art.

“They are a series I’ve been doing where there’s one line that never touches itself or repeats itself. They’re gestural, floating images in space,” Mr. Lohman said.

Mr. Lohman lives in New Orleans, but has a lifelong connection to Martha’s Vineyard. He grew up visiting his aunt and lived on the Island for 30 years. His first Vineyard exhibit was held in 1984 at the Field Gallery in West Tisbury.

Mr. Lohman’s art has taken him all over the world, including commissioned work in London and Laos. He recalled riding on the back of a friend’s motorcycle in Laos looking for steel and a welder after receiving a commission.

The majority of his current work is private installations and commissions, which makes Mr. Lohman appreciate the ability to have a public show.

“It’s nice to have a show and put work out there. People still love going to galleries, which is wonderful. It’s certainly a lot better than just seeing art on the internet,” he said.

A reception for the exhibit will be held on Sept. 15 at Turpentine Gallery. More information about Mr. Lohman’s work can be found a lineartgallery.com.
