Sidney Morris’s life will be celebrated this Sunday, Oct. 13 at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury beginning at 5 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

In Sidney’s obituary and in many postings on Facebook, his many endeavors are mentioned. I remember him saying, “If I didn’t have to sleep, I might be able to get everything done!” And then he would yawn. He wasn’t fearless, but he didn’t let venturing into the unknown dissuade him from pursuing his dreams. Most of his projects required assistance from others, which meant that he had to sufficiently convey his ideas and inspire others to help make complicated and difficult plans come to fruition.

He didn’t shy away from projects that seemed undoable. He would leap right into undertakings that were beyond his previous experiences. I don’t know if he was comfortable at being in over his depth, but somehow he managed to keep his head above water.

When a person dies, we fellow humans often grant them sainthood. Because of Sidney’s devotion to the wellbeing and enlightenment of others, he was looked upon by many as a saint during his life. I recall how bewildered we were when he revealed that he was merely human. He was just a regular guy.

However, he was a guy with a very big heart, a very open mind and an undeniable urge to inspire others to experience the wonders of life.

Our world and our lives are so much more wonderful because of that regular guy, Sidney Morris.
