Nick Rabeni, a senior at the regional high school, has qualified for the Division 2 State Golf Championship, which will be held Monday at Berkshire Hills Country Club in Pittsfield.

He earned his spot by shooting an 81, finishing eighth in the Division 2 South Section Invitational on Thursday. Sophomore Jacoby Light shot an 84 to finish 16th, capping off his season.

In his second year coaching the team, Coach Henry Smith has seen the students’ growth throughout the two seasons.

“Nick has been a long time coming,” he said. “He’s been growing as a player and a leader on the team and this is just a really cool [way] to end his high school golf career. [For Jacoby], to finish 16th as a younger guy, it’s really impressive.”

Golf matches have both individual and team components.

“You get to play with your teammates and grow through them and then you have individual opportunities to compete and get that aspect of golf,” Mr. Smith said.

Mr. Smith said he is proud of the whole team effort this season.

“Individually I’ve seen a ton of growth in these kids and I don’t have one kid that isn’t enjoying it and improving at an impressive rate,” he said. “I’m really lucky that they’re super committed to it.”
