I don’t like to spread bad news but here it comes: the post-Halloween reveal. On Nov. 1 there is no moonlight. This is a new moon, meaning a dark, very dark night. It is also Day of the Dead, part one.
Nov. 2 is the Day of the Dead, part two. Some places observe the occasion for more than two days.
Nov. 3 is the day we gain another hour of darkness in the afternoon. Set your clocks back when you get up.
Nov. 4 was Walter Cronkite’s birthday. He was a rock. He is sorely missed.
Nov. 5 is election day. Please VOTE. Do not wear your campaign regalia to the polling place or town clerk Tara Whiting-Wells will shoo you away.
Nov, 6 is when the world is still trembling in anticipation of the results of this country’s most consequential election ever. Where did you say you are moving to? I have heard that Tristan da Cunha is a nice little island in the middle of nowhere. But, sorry, they don’t let new people move there.
Let us look on the bright side. I hope we are all sighing with relief and laughing for joy when this sorry week is over. To start, here are some happiness-inducing activities to get through the immediate weekend.
Did you join the hundreds of your neighbors who climbed ladders and pounded nails, helping to erect the new Agricultural Hall back in 1994? Thirty years ago a group of about 50 Islanders went to New Hampshire to dismantle a 100-year-old post and beam barn, then transport the numbered pieces to a newly-prepared site in West Tisbury. Over the course of the next three long days, almost a thousand Islanders re-assembled the structure on the property, re-creating a new home for the Agricultural Society by using sheer manpower, muscle and skills, fueled by fellowship and camaraderie.
To celebrate the anniversary, the Agricultural Society is inviting model makers and wanna-be model makers to come to the hall between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, to construct table-top replicas of the building. Materials will be provided for the one-day architects. Cardboard, blocks, scraps of this and that will be available, or bring your own supplies.
The structures will be displayed and judged during the annual Barn Raisers Ball in the evening, Saturday, from 7 to 10 p.m. And the favorite will win a year’s membership to the Ag Society, as well as distinction and applause from the crowd. Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish provide the music.
Enjoy seeing a seldom-viewed section of up-Island Saturday by registering ahead for the first of this year’s winter walk series sponsored by the Vineyard Conservation Society. The event begins at 10 a.m. with a trek through the somewhat secluded Tiasquam Reserve to the vistas of Waskosims Rock. At 3.7 miles, it is “a moderately challenging hike,” says the VCS website.
Happy birthday to Jerry Gallagher Saturday, Nov. 2. Happy birthday on Wednesday, Nov. 5 to Liz Witham and Harvey Mazer. And happy birthday to our former postmaster Vicky Thurber on Thursday, Nov. 6.
Congratulations to Dorothy Whiting who has sold her house and is moving “outa here” to Western Massachusetts with her adorable Jack Russell pups.
