Audiences will be thrown into a mashup of The Princess Bride and Star Wars at the production of Space Princess Wars, performed by the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School.

Performances start Thursday, Dec. 12 and run through Saturday, Dec. 14 at the Grange Hall.

According to director Heather Capece, the production includes everything she looks for in a play.

“Every year I try and find something with a little adventure and some sort of fun and appropriate for the younger kids and the opportunity to have the little kids and extras,” she said.

The rehearsal process has been taking place at the West Tisbury library.

“When the kids got the lightsabers, the quote I have from the kids was ‘best prop ever,’” she said. “That excitement for them having to do sword fighting is fun.”

The play was written by Don Zolidis, a playwright Ms. Capece is familiar with having previously produced three of his plays for the charter school.

“He has a lot of things that are nice for a school play which is he lets you adapt genders and if you need to change something he’s open to that,” she said. “It helps with a school play because kids aren’t perfect with their lines. [He] worked in a school before and he’s very lenient on some things. It works well for a lot of kids.”

Because the production involves students from kindergarten to 12th grade, the mentorship between the older and younger students is showcased.

“We have older kids helping the little kids and those are some of the things I love,” Ms. Capece said. “I love seeing

that excitement because I have two actors who have done 12 years of plays....There’s that sense of community that a lot of them continue year after year.”

Ms. Capece is encouraging the community to come out and see the show.

“I like the shows to be fun,” she said. “If your inner geekiness is a jedi, come dressed up and have fun and you will get all the jokes. And even if you don’t know Star Wars and Princess Bride, it’s still a fun story.”

Performances are Dec. 12 and 13 at 6 p.m. and Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. All shows are held at the Grange Hall.
