Oak Bluffs has that magical tree lighting evening, as well as its lustrous color block holiday scenes in Ocean Park. Not to mention talented woodworker Bob Gatchell’s annual exhibit at his home on County Road.

And of course Edgartown is about to light up the night with joyous color and music and a parade and exquisitely choreographed dazzle.

Here, in little West Tisbury, we don’t have to travel down-Island to feel the enchantment of Christmas, and it is not in our commercial district. (What commercial district, you may ask?)

The display of Christmas lights isn’t along one of our major roads, but not far down Oak Lane, at the home of Norm and Kathy Lobb, who each year add more and more radiance to the shimmering display in their yard. A lot of us go out of our way to see the magical showcase. The Lobbs’ exhibit is as homey as pumpkin pie and a lovely neighborly way to shout Merry Christmas to all who drive by.

A new group called Friends of West Tisbury Village is inviting neighbors far and near for hot cocoa, smores, caroling and a peek inside the candy cane tent on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Field Gallery. Sheila Morse reports that the idea for the group grew from this past spring’s Visioning session.

May I panic yet? Or should I wait a few days? It seems this all-involving, gift-giving holiday is arriving particularly early this year. A local merchant friend, attuned to such passages of time, told me that, compared to a year ago, there is one less week for shopping between Thanksgiving and Christmas. So it isn’t just my fragmenting sense of time.

For those who are better organized, perhaps there are performances in town to enjoy this week. On Saturday, Dec. 14, the library is the setting for a concert featuring mother and daughter, Shelly Jones and May Oscan. Vineyard native Ms. Oscan, best known for the rock musical The Ape Woman, has a repertoire of new songs, while Ms Jones, who teaches guitar on the Island, accompanies and performs on her versatile instrument.

Also at the library at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, Ray Whitaker from MVY leads kids from fourth to sixth grades in Radio Games, a program where youngsters learn to use their voices, create sound effects, record and interview other people.

The children who attend the radio session may want to attend a performance of a live radio play version of A Christmas Carol, an adaptation of the famous Charles Dickens story, which will be held closer to Christmas at The Grange. The classic story has been adapted by Brooke Hardman Ditchfield and Brian Ditchfield, and will take place, along with wassail and caroling, Dec. 19, 20 and 21 at 7 p.m and Sunday, Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. And it will be broadcast on MVY on Christmas Eve.

There are lots of birthday celebrations this Saturday, Dec. 14. The special occasion will be shared by Rick Karney, Sarah McKay, Brett Fisher, Cathy Brennan and Ava Vigneault.

Jennifer Mazer celebrates on Sunday, Dec. 15. Sue Hruby shares her birthday on the 16th with the twins Andrea and Juliet Morse. Then Irene Tewksbury blows out a few candles Dec. 18.

The Vineyard Conservation Society holds another of its winter walks this Saturday, Dec. 14, this time at the Island Grown Farm, formerly Thimble Farm. You must register ahead, and dress warmly.
