Six gymnasts at Island Gymnastics recently traveled to Pocasset for the team’s first off-Island meet in five years.

Island Gymnastics is located in West Tisbury and the participants are coached by Elizabeth Goodell. The team had not travelled off-Island for meets since rebuilding from the Covid pandemic.

“The girls have been waiting for this opportunity for a while,” said parent liaison Jessica Mason. “It’s a totally different pressure to be in a gym they’ve never been in before.”

Gabrielle Barros, Kinsley Tarter, Emanuella Aguilar, Estelle Mason, Abella Donahue and Kira DeBettencourt all competed in four events: beam, floor, vault and bars. Each entrant placed in the top seven in their respective all-around competitions. Estelle’s score qualified her for the all-star division in future meets.

“They really were able to maintain their poise and show up and perform,” Ms. Mason said.

The gymnasts ranged in age from 7 to 14.

“It’s really incredible to see that breadth in age and there’s a real variety and range of skill within that range,” Ms. Mason said.

Ms. Mason is excited to continue seeing the camaraderie between the girls grow.

“Traveling off-Island together for the first time gave them an opportunity to start building a cohesive and competitive team but also to come together as a team and build their relationships,” she said.
