A dozen singers from across different musical genres will take the stage at PathwaysARTS this weekend, each backed by the Jeremy Berlin Trio.
The concert is one part of the winter programming at PathwaysARTS, which takes up residence at the Chilmark Tavern, turning the restaurant into an arts venue during the off-season.
“It’s really very exciting to see all the singers of different stripes — some very seasoned professionals, some who have never done it before,” said Mr. Berlin.
Each singer will have a short rehearsal with the band before taking the stage on both Saturday and Sunday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m.
“Part of the joy of doing this is giving people exposure to performance, which is always different than you think it’s going to be,” Mr. Berlin said.
PathwaysARTS also hosts artists from different mediums during the winter, including literature and dance.
On Tuesday, as part of the Poetry and Prose series, Ukrainian-American poet and translator Dzvinia Orlowsky will read over Zoom. The rest of the literary season includes poets from the Island and elsewhere around the country, as well as writers from other genres including nonfiction and memoir.
“We want to put as much emphasis on the richness of writing on the Island as possible,” said Ron Slate, who organizes the Poetry and Prose series. “We try to vary the genre....I also look for things that are hot right now.”
Mr. Slate added that there will be an open mic after each featured writer. There will also be a complete open mic night in February.
Keren Tonnesen, co-director of PathwaysARTS, said that it is important to provide a variety of artistic outlets to the local community during the winter. “The whole reason that Pathways exists in the season is that there’s always been this abandonment of venues or opportunities,” she said. “It’s a great way to meet people and to come and get something culturally enriching.”
