The next Tuesdays in the Newsroom at the Gazette office takes place Feb. 11 and will feature a discussion on homelessness on the Island and efforts to combat it.

Officials from Harbor Homes, the Island nonprofit at the forefront of homelessness prevention efforts on the Vineyard, will lead the discussion.

Harbor Homes runs the winter shelter which is open every night during the winter offering a bed and meals for those in need.

The organization also operates two congregant houses, one for men and one for women, and offers outreach services for at-risk Islanders.

Executive director Brian Morris will take part in the discussion along with Lisa Belcastro who runs the winter shelter, director of homeless services Sharon Brown, and director of operations Chrissie Laury.

The organization has also begun operating daytime warming shelters during the recent cold snap.

The winter shelter has been housed for the last several years on the Martha’s Vineyard Community Services campus but will need to move soon due to construction beginning on the campus. In March, the shelter will be housed at two churches in Edgartown: the Federated Church of Martha’s Vineyard and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Rev. Mark Winters of the Federated Church will also take part in the discussion during this critical time for the organization.

The event is from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

There is no charge but an RSVP is requested. Register in advance at rsvp@vineyardgazette.com.
