Beware the ides of March. March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.

In March, the brave crocus dares the snow. As the flowers bloom in March, let your dreams blossom too.

March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers.

I could go on and on sharing noteworthy quotes about the month of March as all seem magnificently appropriate with March seemingly the most transitional month. Charles Dickens, however, sums it up best with, “It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.”

March is not only the month of flowers and pinkletinks and lambs, but mid-March happens to be the right time for many birthday celebrations including: Kathy Smith, Lew French, Sean Slavin, Brian Cioffi, Adam Miller, Lisa Bibko-Vanderhoop, Sawyer Rothmann, Richard Skidmore, Alan, Porter, Chris Yeomans, Nisa Counter, Zora Morais, Greg O’Gorman, Jay Smalley, Rodeo Purves-Langer, Natalie Francis, Kristi Mayhew, Emma Mayhew, Owen Singer, Lynne Silva, Peter Dunkl, Linda McCarthy, Danny Larsen, Elise Elliston, Matt Tobin, Phil Demers, Ken Petkus, Kim Rome, Ingrid Maidoff, Alistair Morgan and more.

Two noteworthy celebrants, worthy of a special birthday shout out, are Marshall Carroll and Patrick Jenkinson. On March 19, 1969 they were born at what must have been a very crowded Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

March is also the month that folks are welcome to join the fun at the Chilmark Church’s pizza nights. They resumed on March 11, with the return of pizza picker-upper extraordinaire Julie Flanders who had jetted off for a quick week of both rest and fun in the sun with friends in Florida. Pizza is on the table at 6 p.m. with the occasional dessert or salad brought by those who felt like sharing their bounty was in order.

Well wishes to faithful pizza night-goer, Judy Mayhew, who has been a tad under the weather this past week. Daughter Sarah has risen to the easy task of doting on her mom just a little bit extra.

March is also the month of busy greenhouse gardeners. The Allen Farm kiddos, Tavi, Arlo and Scout, have settled in to the warmth the greenhouses offer and sunk their fingers into the soil helping prepare greens for growth.

March is the month we begin to see more vessels out on the water. The USCG buoy tender Ida Lewis paid a visit to Menemsha Bight just a few days ago.

March is the month of science for Falmouth Academy students with their work being showcased for family, friends and judges to view at a science fair. High school freshman and youngest offspring of Liz and Kevin Oliver, Hollis, traveled to Bridgewater State University for the Massachusetts Region V Science & Engineering Fair, where his hard work resulted in receiving an honorable mention for his project titled The Effects of Salinity on Hydroponically Grown Lactuca sativa.

Nearly 140 students participated in what is considered to be the largest educational region in the state. I’ll admit I had to Google “lactuca sativa” to confirm my suspicion that it is, in fact, the scientific name for lettuce. Way to go Hollis.

While the Olivers were off at a college campus cheering on Hollis and taking a moment to lay their eyes on their two eldest Solon and Barrett who attend classes at Bridgewater State, the Carroll family was off at Mount Holyoke College paying a visit to Oona. Grandma Kathie tagged along for the ride and reports that Oona has recovered from a case of the flu. The group also checked out the greenhouse of nearby Smith College.

Theatrical tradition tells me middle schooler Abby Karlinsky must have heard “Break a leg!” dozens of times before she took the stage at the West Tisbury School’s production of Into the Woods. Abby was cast in the role of Cinderella and she rose to the challenge hitting the ball out of the park with her performance. Parents Sarah and Seth are, of course, prouder than proud.

March is the month parents at the Chilmark School gather auction items for the PTO fundraiser. Bea Whiting shares that the auction will be held online from April 3 to 13 with a kick off party to be held at Pathways on Thursday, April 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. Food, drinks, live music and good company are something to mark your calendar for.
