Pianist and filmmaker James Carson traveled the Vineyard last year for a screening of his movie Cabin Music as part of the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society’s FILMUSIC festival. While on-Island he connected with local pianist and piano technician David Stanwood and the two have since begun a collaboration.

On Saturday, Stillpoint in West Tisbury will feature the result of this pairing of piano creativity and expertise, with a concert on Saturday at 2 p.m. and a screening of Cabin Music at 7 p.m.

Mr. Carson grew up in Edmonton, Canada. A piano prodigy, he attended the New England Conservatory before deciding to forgo his studies and backpack all over the world. After his travels, he built a remote cabin where he aimed to transform how music was created.

Cabin Music documents this process.

At the concert on Saturday, Mr. Stanwood will open the event with a musical meditation.

“I’m doing some very light sound production using a method called bowing strings just to get people to sit quietly and listen,” Mr. Stanwood said. “Very subtle sounds and getting people used to feeling like they are in the cabin or in the woods or just there at Stillpoint and open to listening.”

Mr. Carson said Stillpoint was the perfect venue for his vision of bringing Cabin Music to life to audiences in real time. He will perform on one of Mr. Stanwood’s pianos.

“Cabin Music is a really deep inquiry into the origination of music and sound and speech, and where music and ideas come from,” he said. “I think that’s also what Stillpoint is about, so there is a deep overlapping alignment with these two visions.”

Thomas Bena, executive director at Stillpoint, said he is looking forward to the conversation this type of performance encourages.

“[James] is going to play a piece and then open up to the room again in the round, so he’ll be in the center of the room with chairs and a circle around him,” Mr. Bena said. “You’re looking at your neighbors, you’re not looking at a stage, you’re not looking at a podium, you’re looking at each other, and that’s interesting to me.”

Stillpoint assistant director Allison Simon said that Cabin Music is exactly the type of event that Stillpoint was looking to host.

“One of the things that we’ve been trying to do, is stay open minded and curious about what can ultimately happen here,” she said.

Mr. Carson said he is looking forward to interacting with Vineyard audiences.

“Cabin Music needs the right people in the right spaces, and it needs stability,” he said. “It needs consistency and stability so that audiences can catch up and get aligned with this. I’m looking forward to meeting everybody and seeing how this goes and creating this event together.”

Both Mr. Carson and Mr. Stanwood aren’t sure what the evening will look like and are embracing the unknown.

“Come what may,” Mr. Stanwood said.
