The seventh grade boys travel basketball team won the New England Basketball Championship at Rhode Island College last weekend.

The team beat Mashpee 50-38 in the championship game to take the title. They also won games against Avon, Windham and Portland, going 4-0 in the tournament.

The recognition and excitement from the community was surprising but welcomed, according to assistant coach Shawna Rose Lima.

“The community and support coming off the boat, the Steamship having it on their website, coming off the boat to sirens [from police and fire trucks], it was overwhelming and amazing,” she said. “For those kids, these are memories they are never going to forget. We live in a special place and I want that noted.”

The boys qualified for the tournament by winning the Thanksgiving Classic in Hanover back in November before the team’s season officially started.

It was the team’s best season yet, going 11-3, according to Ms. Lima. The three losses came from participating in the Barnstable Youth Basketball Tournament only a few weeks prior to the New England tournament, which helped serve as motivation for the championship games.

“It was amazing,” Ms. Lima said. “[During the tournament,] I was thinking they can do it and they will do it. We have a great squad.”
