Harrison Lazarus, a junior at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, is teaming up with the Harley Riders and local businesses to raise money for Island veterans.

Mr. Lazarus will host a silent auction and fundraiser on Sunday, May 25 at the P.A. Club as part of the Freedom Fighters Project to create affordable housing for Island veterans.

Last June, the Oak Bluffs’ zoning board of appeals approved a development of 12 units of affordable housing for veterans to be located on Bellevue avenue. The project is being led by Island Housing Trust and the Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center.

Mr. Lazarus is continuing an effort started last year by high school senior Calahan D’arcy. Mr. D’Arcy raised over $12,000 for the housing project, according to the Island Housing Trust’s social media.

“I was super excited to hear about it,” Mr. Lazarus said, of his classmate’s work. “The way Cal was talking about it, the way he explained it... it was really moving.”

Also on May 25, the Harley Riders will set off across the Island to raise awareness for veterans.

Mr. Lazarus said he plans to raise money throughout the summer, including T-shirt sales at Sharks games.

When he talks with local businesses about being sponsors for the silent auction, Mr. Lazarus said people often ask him who in his family has served. He is not related to veterans, but many of his friends and community members are. He said that he was moved by their stories.

“I haven’t been afflicted by it personally, but I see the issue and I think they deserve better, frankly,” he said.
