The end of May is here. It is time to flip the calendar to June and embrace the summer season. It’s time to be delighted by the early morning chirping of baby birds, the clanging of the bell buoy, the hum of the lobstermen’s engines, dew on the grass, the sweet smell of beach roses and sipping lemonade from an entrepreneurial child’s roadside stand.
I’ll confess, I often dip my toes into summer with the thought that I “just need to endure it.” I’m not really one to enjoy the heat. I definitely don’t like mosquitoes. I’m not a fan of ticks — who is? I sure don’t like sharing the road with mopeds. But the sounds of kids squealing in delight, the smell of lobster bait mingled with salt air and the sight of magical sunsets over water try really hard to counteract my occasional, but admitted negativity.
Jon and Kristie Mayhew used the long weekend as an opportunity to hit the open road and search for scenic vistas, quaint town and photographic opportunities while they camped their way through western Massachusetts and southern Vermont. While out and about they celebrated Jon’s birthday.
Celebrating a little closer to home was Moxie Ginsburg. How do I know? I had the pleasure of quietly watching daughter Sophie frolic through down-Island Cronig’s, with her dad David of course, and a bouquet of flowers announcing to all that it was her mom’s birthday. She squealed with delight all the way through the check-out process. It’s life’s simple pleasures that make us all smile and, trust me, everyone was.
Jill and Ted Bernhard paid a quick visit to their Carroll Lane home. It was a brief getaway from reality of day-to-day life and an opportunity to lay in the groundwork for a wonderful summer of a revolving door of daughters and guests.
Hartley, Jeff, Abby, Mia and Grace Pollard paid a visit from their home in upstate New York. The girls may be growing up right before our eyes, but they all still love their time on the water with Capt. Scott McDowell fishing aboard the Lauren C.
Harris Loeser jet-setted his way across the country to spend a little time at the family home on Flanders Lane. He’s been a most welcomed addition to early morning coffee club on Squid Row. He confesses he won’t be around a whole bunch this summer, but plans to make the most of his time in town absorbing the sounds, smells and breathtaking moments until his return.
Steve and Joan Dufresne, also know as fishing vessel Chaser, popped over from Falmouth this past weekend to stroll the dock, say hi to friends and soak up a little sunshine.
I’m not sure if the whole Harrison gang popped down for the weekend, but I did catch a glimpse of Ellie, Lucy and dad Peter. Once school is out, they, along with Hannah and mom Amy, will be calling their house on State Road home for the better part of the summer.
Annie Treitman reminds us to save that date for the upcoming Martha’s Vineyard Book Festival. Taking place on the CCC grounds from August 1 to 3, we have an opportunity to explore “The Power of Perspective” through books, authors and stories. You can check out the entire line up at mvbookfestival.com.
Another save that date shout-out is for something happening a little quicker on the calendar. Author and historian Tom Dresser will give a talk on offer on Friday, June 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the library. The subject is the American Revolution through the eyes of residents and soldiers of Chilmark, and is being done in recognition of the 250th anniversary. The event is brought to us by the Chilmark Historical Commission, the friends of both the library and up-Island COA as part of the lunch & learn series.
