The Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club will host its 33rd fly rod striped bass catch and release tournament, beginning the evening of Saturday, May 31.
Recognizing concerns over catch-and-release mortality, the tournament rules have been modified so the focus has changed from high fish tallies to a fish quota — the first team to fill its quota wins. Plaques are awarded based on each qualifying team’s earliest finish time.
The catch and release promotes beach angler camaraderie and downplays competition for prizes, which are handed out in a raffle. Participants who have not caught a single fish often walk away with one of the rods or reels donated by generous sponsors.
The entry fee is $45.
A breakfast and awards ceremony will be held Sunday morning, June 1, at the Rod and Gun Club off Third Street in Edgartown.
