The Martha’s Vineyard high school girls tennis team will be playing in the Division 3 state championship title game after a 3-2 semifinal win over St. John Paul II School Wednesday afternoon.
First singles Laina Dubin won 6-4, 6-3, the first doubles team of Leah Thomson and Zoe Treitman won 6-4, 7-5 and the second doubles team of Ella Moran and Clementine Zeender won 6-1, 6-3.
The strength of both doubles teams contributed to the win, according to coach Bill Rigali.
“Clementine and Elle were very focused and got us off to a great start and finished fast,” he said. “In the second doubles position, we had taken the first set but we trailed 5-1 in the second set but reeled off six straight games. That put us in position with still having Laina and Charlotte on the courts.”
Second singles Charlotte Marshard won her first set 6-4, but lost 1-6 and 3-6 in her last two sets. Third singles Tessa Schulz lost in straight sets.
Dubin has stepped up for the team on many occasions, according to Coach Rigali.
“She played a rock solid match with very few errors,” he said. “She was aggressive when she needed to be and played smart tennis and served well.”
As the girls set their eyes on the final prize, Coach Rigali feels grateful.
“What a wonderful opportunity,” he said. “You don’t get a lot of chances to play in a state semifinal or final, so grab that opportunity and know that a lot of people support you here — the parents, the tennis community and the high school.”
The girls will play in the state championship on Sunday at MIT against the winner of Dover-Sherborn and Bishop Fenwick. Match begins at 4:30 p.,m.
