Colorful sharks will be swimming around parks in Oak Bluffs in a public art installation called Sharks In The Parks.

Hosted by Galaxy Arts MV, local artists were invited to decorate four-foot plywood sharks for an outdoor exhibit as part of the Jaws 50th celebrations.

The sharks will be installed on June 20 throughout various parks in Oak Bluffs, including Viera, Nashawena, Niantic, Hiawatha, Hartford and around Sunset Lake,

The sharks will then be auctioned off on July 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Portuguese American Club.

The creativity that the 25 artists have brought to the Sharks has been exciting, according to organizer Holly Alaimo.

“We’ve had people make things out of metal,” she said. “We have an incredible collage of beach stones and driftwood. They’re just stunning paintings and so varied. It’s really been a great, fun project.”

Galaxy Arts MV is a nonprofit cooperative that was housed at 99 Dukes County avenue but moved out of its space in 2024.

“We thought if we didn’t have a space to do it in, we would like to do something in the public sector,” Ms. Alaimo said.

The process started in March when the wood outlines were cut and handed out to artists. Ms. Alaimo thought the anniversary would be the perfect time for the project.

“We’re just looking for something to make the art community feel positive again,” she said. “There’s so much going on, and this has just been a fun, positive experience for everybody involved.”

Ms. Alaimo is honored to be a part of the Island’s bustling art scene during a monumental celebration.

“We are so lucky to be here in a place where we have people who are just wildly creative,” she said. “It’s great for us to make it a community situation.”
