The Featherstone Center for the Arts holiday gift show has been an annual highlight for the past 23 years. This year it includes handmade gifts from over 100 local artists.

“It is a tradition that is well loved by our artists and the Island community in terms of shopping local for the holidays,” said Featherstone executive director Ann Smith.

Each morning, before the show opens at noon, Ms. Smith takes inventory, replenishing the stock of gifts, including ornaments, clothing, jewelry, photography, ceramics, stationary and more. The show is also a fundraiser for Featherstone, with the proceeds split by the artists and the organization.

On a recent morning, Ms. Smith looked out the window at the old farmhouse where the show used to be held.

“It’s so hard for me to think about all the shows that we used to do over there at a 10th of the size,” she said. “When we brought it over here, it just exploded. The number of artists that we can now support is incredible.”

The show’s popularity has grown so much that Featherstone had to cap the number of participants for the first time.

Ms. Smith said she is grateful for the contributions of everyone involved.

“What really warms my heart is there are people who are making it a conscious and intentional effort to support Featherstone,” she said.

The holiday gift show at Featherstone Center for the Arts is open daily from noon to 4 p.m., through Dec. 17. For more information, visit featherstoneart.org.
