It’s an exciting time to be a student-athlete at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. Between prom and the sports playoffs, there’s plenty to dress up for.
Four Vineyard teams have punched their tickets to the post season and are awaiting the official release of the brackets this weekend. The girls and boys tennis teams, baseball and girls lacrosse are all headed to the playoffs, and the girls golf team has qualified for the state finals next Wednesday at the Foxborough Country Club.
The track and field team is also headed to states, which will be held next weekend at Bridgewater State.
The girls tennis team holds the top spot in division three rankings with a spotless 15-0 record. On Tuesday, they swept Nantucket at home and will travel to Barnstable on Wednesday for their final regular-season match.
Before the win over the Whalers, the girls secured an impressive 4-1 victory on Saturday over Sharon, a division one powerhouse. Their opponents came in with only one loss on the season and a top 15 ranking in their division. It was a true measuring stick opponent for the Vineyarders, and they soundly came out on top.
Boys tennis holds the 12th spot in division three. They wrapped up their regular season with a 3-2 win on Nantucket Tuesday after avenging an earlier loss to Cape Cod Academy on Monday. The boys record sits at 12-4, and they could be hosting a first-round matchup depending on how the bracket falls. Regardless, with some time to rest another deep playoff run is not out of the realm of possibility.
The baseball team has also won two in a row recently, defeating Monomoy last Friday 5-1 and Barnstable on Monday 6-2. Against the Red Hawks, Ryan Heidt had a day at the plate, going 2-2 with a walk and three runs scored. Lathrop Keene had a double and two RBIs, Leo Napior had two hits and an RBI, and Eli Bryant secured the win on the mound with five punch-outs. As a team, the Vineyarders stole 10 bases as well.
The boys are currently ranked 24th in division three with a 9-9 record. They have two more road games to wrap up their regular season; they play Cohasset on Wednesday and Nantucket on Saturday.
The girls lacrosse team notched their ninth win of the season last Thursday with a 19-1 thumping of Sturgis East. Ashley Silva tallied five goals, Brynn Savva had four, Alicia Silva and Lara Sedlier netted three each, while Anina Garvin, Hailey Smith, Anna Alves and Madi Curelli all scored as well.
With a 9-7 record to finish the regular season, the girls have earned the right to a play-in game next week. They will hit the road to play a team outside the top 20 in Division Three. If they win that game, they will be tasked with one of the top teams in the bracket in their next matchup.
The girls golf team has one match left in their regular season, Thursday against Duxbury. With eight wins already this season, this is the second year in a row the Vineyarders are going to states. It’s also the second time in as many years that girls golf has been a varsity sport at the high school. This year they finished second in the Cape and Islands League behind Barnstable.
Track and field competed in the Cape and Islands league championship on Monday in Sandwich, bringing home a considerable amount of hardware with multiple finishes on the podium.
Enzo Reis earned a gold medal in the 110 meter hurdles, finishing in 15.29. He also earned a bronze in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.54. The other gold went to the 4x400 meter relay team of Reis, Anthony Da Silva, Luis Costa and George McDow. They finished in 3:31.14.
The 4x800 meter team of Robert Riis, Nicholas Gomes, Noah Burns and Ben Fuller finished second at 9:19.24. Fuller also had a second place finish in the two mile at 11:07.33. Costa got the silver in 800 meter at 2:00.22. McDow also a second place finish in the 400 meter at 52.12.
Maria Xavier took second in the long jump with a 16’ 2.25” leap, third in the 100 meter at 13.13, and another third in the 200 meter at 26.46. Katelyn Tankersley tossed the discus the second farthest at 81’ 5” and the shot put the third farthest at 29’ 6”.
And finally, the 4x100 relay team of Nathan Kohler, Gabriel Slossberg, Jamison DeMello and Lucas Martins finished third at 46.08.
There is still the twilight invitational this Saturday in Norwell as a final shot for qualifying and sharpening for states.
The sailing team currently sits in third place in the Cape and Islands league standings with the league championship coming Wednesday in Hyannis. While the Vineyarders did not qualify for any of the NESSA trophy races this year, the opportunity to win the league is still in play and that would be a welcome ending to a season where they have compiled a 7-2 league record so far.
