The world around us says June. Trees, grasses, flowers beds are glowing with youth and are robust with vitality. Nature is thumping its breast.
The early June calendar is popping with activities. The first of the season’s farmers’ markets is Saturday, June 6, at the Agricultural Hall grounds.
Last summer the market achieved national attention when attorney Alan Dershowitz was refused service at a stand called Good Pierogi. Mr. Dershowitz threatened to sue the owner for violating his rights. The dispute attracted national attention, a flurry of letters to the editor, a re-write of the farmers’ market bylaws and a line of customers who had never before tasted a pierogi.
In the old days, nobody paid attention when the opera world’s acclaimed soprano Beverly Sills donned a pair of bibbed denim overalls, set up a card table and sold her own-grown onions at the farmers’ market. She should, at least, have attracted a photographer.
Weddings are taking place in churches and gardens and porches. Spare no expense. One mature woman we know says she will earn $6,000 this weekend alone, baby-sitting the bride’s eight-month-old nephew during events related to one Island wedding. Baby-sitting!
West Tisbury’s civic leaders will host the annual town picnic next weekend, on Saturday, June 13 at noon. The party will be held at the Grange Hall. All are welcome. Bring your own food and a blanket. The town will provide games for all ages and ice cream. If it rains, as it did last year, the picnic will move indoors.
Dr. Sara Rosenthal and Dr. Julie Prazich have arrived from San Diego to spend an extended season at their West Tisbury home. The women are hosts of the annual Remember the Rosenthals concert at the library at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 13. The program, by the group Music Street, is led by pianist Diana Katzenberg Braun, with a program called Sparkling Threads. All the chosen pieces promise to be dazzling, colorful, spirited and lively. Perfect for the young season.
Similarly sparkling, I expect, will be the ambiance for the Island Autism gala on Friday, June 19, starting at 5 p.m. Here is your chance to wear your summery cocktail attire and dance under the stars at the program’s handsome facility, located at 515 Lambert’s Cove Road. Adding to the spark are food, drinks, live music by The Vine Shakers, a silent auction and an opportunity to support this innovative (and miraculous to me) program.
Happy birthday on Sunday, June 7, to Joan Apt, and on Monday, July 8 to Susanna Sturgis and Simon Hammerlund. Tuesday, June 9 is the big day for the twins David and Woollcott Smith. David is a few minutes older. Then Milo D’Antonio celebrates Wednesday, June 10.
Sad news from everyone’s friend at the post office, Jack Shea. After 18 years together, Jack’s beloved companion, a little dog named Oswalt, had died and left a big hole in Jack’s heart.
