The Edgartown police department is investigating an altercation that occurred between five people in the parking lot at the Stop & Shop in town on Sunday evening.

Edgartown and state police officers were dispatched after they received a call about a fight between a cyclist and a passenger of a vehicle that had been stopped going the wrong way through the parking lot.

Nobody was injured during the altercation and no charges have been filed yet, but some may be coming.

“This whole incident is still under investigation, and I do believe that charges will be coming once the investigation is complete,” said Edgartown police Chief Chris Dolby. “[W]hen we get all this properly figured out and everybody properly identified, there will be summons issued for them to appear before [a] clerk magistrate’s hearing. The summons of the charges would consist of disorderly conduct and assault and battery.”

According to Chief Dolby, as the operator of the vehicle attempted to turn around, the cyclist refused to move out of the way, making it difficult for the driver to perform the maneuver. At that point, the passenger of the vehicle decided to get out and confront the cyclist.

A video, captured by onlookers, begins after the vehicle attempted to turn around, showing two individuals arguing and then fighting. Onlookers quickly became involved and worked to separate the two individuals.

“I just ask that everybody use their patience. Patience and common sense goes a long, long way,” said Chief Dolby. “There’s no need for any of this behavior, and I’m happy that no one got hurt, but there was the potential for somebody to get hurt by that type of activity. We don’t want to see that happen.”
