The third and final $4 million grand prize in the Massachusetts State Lottery’s “4,000,000 Platinum Jackpot” instant ticket game washed up on the Vineyard this past Friday at Great Harbor Market in Edgartown.
Enrique Frias Mejia of Aurora, Colo. was the lucky winner, though he didn’t initially realize the magnitude of his prize. It wasn’t until he met with a Massachusetts Lottery employee to discuss payment options that Mr. Frias Mejia discovered he hadn’t won $4,000, but $4 million, the lotto said in a statement.
Mr. Frias Mejia chose to receive his prize in cash, granting him a one-time payment of $2.6 million, before taxes. He told Mass Lotto officials that he hopes to spend his winnings on long-term investments that will help his family, such as buying a house.
As the vendor of a winning ticket, Great Harbor Market will receive a $40,000 bonus from the Massachusetts State Lottery.
Employee Victor Amaro activated the market’s lottery tickets that day and told the Gazette on Tuesday that he was in disbelief that a winner had been among them.
“I had $4 million in my hands,” he said, shaking his head with a laugh.
Mr. Amaro said the store has seen an uptick in customer activity since Friday, and people are eager to know which kind of ticket Mr. Frias Mejia purchased. But the ship for the $4 million grand prize has sailed.
“Unfortunately, we don’t have any more,” Mr. Amaro said.
The Vineyard has now had several big lottery winners this year. A $15 million dollar ticket was sold at the Oak Bluffs VFW this spring and a $1 million ticket was sold at Woodland Grill just a week later.
