Rain, rain and more rain, we needed it and we got it all in two days. It did help bring the temperatures down, which was a real relief to many. The plants and trees are happy, and I am sure the puddles and ponds were a good source of water for the animals.
Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Rafael De Assis and Itan Nunes, who celebrated their day July 2; Anthonella Dias, Keena-Kay Dyke July 3; William Hagerty, Ava Parker, July 4; Peter Rosbeck, Maverick Sylva, Lowell Delasin, July 5; and to Thomas Mullen, who celebrated his day July 9.
The Fourth of July was a successful day. It was a little warmer than we might want, but otherwise it was a good day. For the past 30-some years I have hosted the Colonial Navy band. It has been a great time and I enjoy having them. Some of the original members still come and march and we meet new members and their families each year. My neighbors also enjoy them as they practice their fife and drums a couple of hours before the parade and they love the concert. It is a great day for everyone.
They have started the work at the recreation area by the Boys & Girls Club. I walked by there a few days ago and could not believe how big the area is now that they have taken down the fences and have taken the tennis court out and have leveled the baseball field. Looking at the plans there will be activities for all there, and even a walking track around the whole area. The project will take up to 10 months or so and I think it will be worth the wait.
I have heard from a couple of friends that it took them an hour to get to Edgartown from Vineyard Haven. After seeing the pictures and films on social media of the line of cars up the road you know that real summer has arrived. Also, I went by the Stop & Shop at 7:15 one morning and there was a line of cars waiting to get into the parking lot.
Needless to say, I opted not to go in. Patience is going to be the word of the month as there are long lines everywhere you go. I always have in the back of my mind a quote that a friend had by their picture saying Kindness gives birth to kindness. Sometimes it is hard, but they are great words to try to live by.
Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
