A person broke into The Green Room in Vineyard Haven over the weekend and pocketed thousands of dollars’ worth of merchandise, according to the owner and police.

On Sunday morning, police received a report of a broken shop window and missing merchandise,  including several pairs of sunglasses, said Tisbury police Chief Habekost. Security camera footage shows what police believe to be a male suspect breaking into the shop and making off with the stolen items.

According to Chief Habekost, the break-in is believed to have happened either late Saturday night or in the early hours of Sunday. The store was unoccupied at the time and the suspect entered through the window he broke. 

Green Room owner Elaine Barse told the Gazette the suspect stole about $10,000 worth of merchandise.

Police posted security camera footage from the Main street shop on social media that shows the suspect methodically stuffing several pairs of sunglasses into bags, including a rolling suitcase that was also reported stolen.

Chief Habekost said the investigation is ongoing and the department turned to the public in hopes of getting a tip about the burglar. The identity of the suspect, who appeared to be wearing a disguise, is unknown.

“We are still recovering and discovering evidence,” he said. “If we could get any tips from the public about the possible identity of this suspect, that would be very helpful to the investigation and to the victims of this crime.”

Ms. Barse said she appreciated the department’s attentiveness to the situation.

“The police responded very quickly, and I’m happy with their response,” Ms. Barse said. “I’m grateful that nobody was injured or that it wasn’t more severe than it was.”
